Knight Design Footpegs
Footpegs are an underestimated component to controlling your bike, especially when the tarmac ends. If nothing else, standing on a bike and using your legs as added suspension helps to reduce off-road beatings.
We’ve seen many options surface over the past few years but the folks at Knight Design have an interesting take on keeping your feet planted to the bike. Many ADV bikes come with narrow street style pegs which pivot easily and make for roomy shifting.
Unfortunately, narrow pegs can place excess pressure on the arch or balls of your feet when standing and don’t really give you enough bite when the going gets rough. Some peg manufacturers solve this by widening the peg platform and adding rather aggressive teeth or screws to grip your boots. Once installed, you’re generally stuck with what you have.
Alicia at Knight Design shared with us their story of starting this business only making a few products for small motorcycle communities, but then it turned into something much bigger. We tried out their new one piece billet pegs for the 2014 KTM 690 Enduro and were pleasantly surprised with the quality and thoughtfulness of design.
What makes these unique is the peg surface, or “tread”, is interchangeable with a few screws. The Hunter tread is patterned with a small pyramid design which will be easy on boots and more comfortable for street or touring riding. The Trakker tread features a series of small machined posts which provide considerably more bite.
For added comfort, many of their pegs are offered in lowered heights and the KTM 690 Enduro version brings your foot down about 7/8 of an inch. Although this required some shift and brake lever adjustment, the resulting extra comfort was noticeable.
The only other swappable surface peg we've tested is the SW-Motech on and off-road peg, which featires a removable rubber pad. Compared to other larger and more expensive options, at only $134.95 the Knight Design pegs are a fantastic value in terms of build quality and functionality. We would suggest making the platform another half an inch wider for off-road riding with larger boots but it didn’t affect the ride negatively. A rubber snap-in insert would be a nice upgrade option in the future as well.
Ultimately, we’ve found the Knight Design foot pegs to be a solid, functional and attractive upgrade at a very reasonable price. 100% made in the USA and ready to rock on your KTM, BMW or KLR ! MSRP: $134.95 KnightDesignllc.com
